When biking, triking, or scooting, it’s oh-so-important to make sure that they start on the right foot — or pedal. That’s why we’re here to help. Our JoJo bike size guide is packed with all the different bikes, trikes, and scooters to help them, and you, get moving in a way that suits your lifestyle. From selecting the right pick to all the safety tips and tricks, your little one will be riding confidently in no time. Whether it’s 2 wheels or more, there are always adventures galore. Now, where shall we go?

Shop Bikes, Trikes and Scooters

Children’s bikes are typically sized by age range. But, to get the ideal choice of kids' bike, measure their height and inside leg length. For the best measurement, subtract their sitting height from their standing height and you’ll know where the frame needs to sit on their body.

Use the heel-on-pedal method to check if a bike is the right size. If the seat is at maximum extension and the extended leg is bent, it’s too small. As your child starts learning to ride a bike, they’ll want to get both feet on the ground. Once they’re riding confidently, raise the saddle if needed.

The best bike for your child is down to their age. However, if your child is ready to take the next step in their cycling journey, then do whatever you feel is the best step for the child.

18-24 months: Balance bike
2 to 5 years: Bike with stabilisers
5 years+: Bike without stabilisers

The best scooter for your child is down to their age. We’d recommend scooters for a 1-year-old that can be steered by an adult. As your child grows and gains confidence from 18 months, remove parent steering handles so they can ride independently.

12-18 months: Scooter with steering handle
18-36 months: Ride-on scooter
18-36 months: Walking bike scooter
2 to 5 years: 2-wheeled scooter

We recommend that trikes should be used by younger children. The ideal age for independent tricycle use is around 2 to 3. However, with adult support and guidance, some trikes may be suitable for children as young as 10 months.

Many of the trikes we sell on JoJo Maman Bébé can be converted into balance bikes, too. So it’s easy to take off a wheel and watch your child adjust from 3 wheels to 2.

To make sure your child’s helmet fits correctly, measure the head circumference about an inch above the eyebrows. Make sure the tape is level all the way around.

We sell helmets suitable for a child with a head circumference of 48 - 54cm (roughly 12 months to 8 year olds). All helmets come with adjustable dividers to guarantee a secure fit.
